Huntington Beach Surfboard Shapers

Two generations of Sakal family board building—plus the restless experimentation of Doc Lausch—from foam dust and hand tools to boards made for the way people actually surf.

Surfing since 1959

Ed Sakal

A lifetime of Huntington Beach board knowledge, passed from one generation to the next.

Ed started surfing at ten, renting surf mats in Hermosa Beach before getting his first real board at thirteen. At fifteen, a Boy Scout trip put him in 15-foot surf at Killer Dana. Ed and the scoutmaster were the only two who paddled out.

He went on to compete in WSA events and ride for the Greg Noll surf team. In Southern California, Ed worked for Greg Noll. When he lived in Hawaii, he worked for Town & Country. Back on the mainland, he worked for ET Surfboards in Hermosa Beach, then opened his own glassing and shaping operation.

That work eventually became Bullit Surfboards in Huntington Beach and later Sakal Surf Shop. Ed began teaching Ryan with scraps of foam and sandpaper when his son was about five. Today Ed and Ryan represent two generations of Sakal shapers, while Ed also enjoys teaching his grandkids—the family’s third generation of surfers.

Ryan Sakal

Raised in Ed’s shaping room. Building customs around the surfer, not a stock formula.

Ryan grew up watching Ed build boards and helping wherever he could. At fourteen, he shaped his first board from start to finish and rode it in competition in Santa Cruz. Surfing and shaping developed side by side from there.

He competed professionally, appeared in surf magazines, and shaped as an ambassador for brands including Quiksilver, Billabong, Stüssy, Town & Country, and Superbrand. Since 2014, he has also worked closely with Chris Christenson in North County San Diego.

Ryan describes a custom board as closer to a tailored suit than a product pulled from a rack. New Ryan Sakal boards are coming into Just Surfboards, and the shop is taking Ryan custom orders now by phone and in person.

Jeff “Doc” Lausch

The Mad Doctor of Huntington Beach has spent decades testing what a surfboard can be.

Doc’s first board was a blue 9'4" Jack Haley that weighed nearly as much as he did. At ten, he spent days in the driveway sanding away the pigment because he thought it would make the board lighter. It did not—but the work changed the direction of his life.

By fifteen, he had traded an old Weber Performer for a Skil 100 planer and shaped a 7'2" diamond-tail single-fin. He learned from the Huntington Beach builders around him, including Shawn Stussy, and kept experimenting until Surf Prescriptions took shape in 1982.

Performance shortboards, twins, grovelers, mid-lengths, and genuinely strange ideas have all come out of Doc’s “Mad Lab.” Surf Prescriptions boards are coming soon to Just Surfboards.
